why we’re using (and will keep using!) cashew mylk

cashew milkLast autumn we addressed our sudden company wide removal of almond mylk back in May here on the blogand we’ve revisited that decision over the last few weeks in the wake of Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.’s call to action in California. After much discussion we have decided to continue replacing all of our ALMOND based nut mylks with CASHEW, to do our part in alleviating the overall demand on almonds. It’s nights like last night (hello 12 hour downpour) that we often forget environmental crisis like the ongoing west coast drought. Moreover, while it’s easy to feel the effects in our own life (read: grocery bill), it is much harder to grasp the inverse and abstract affect WE as consumers have some 3,000 miles away. We are working hard to build an eco-conscious company and consider this a small step in the right direction. Thank you, as always for your support and understanding.

*We will still be producing almond mylk in small, special order batches for those with allergies. Please call customer service at 301.246.0509 if this applies to you!

straight from the fruit – a breakdown of the healthiest (and LEAST HEALTHY) sources of coconut water

dixiePuree Juice’s Bethesda Manager, Dixie, modeling the latest in our efforts to continue bringing you THE BEST quality, cold pressed juice, despite new FDA regulation banning the importation of raw coconut water! There was only one step up from what we were currently carrying (Exotic Superfood brand), but we’re happy to be bringing you fresh tapped from the (ORGANIC!) fruit, coconut water from here forward. :) Check out FoodBabe’s breakdown of coconut water below or click here for her full blog post.coconut_water

national grapefruit month

February is National Grapefruit Month and as someone who previously only knew what the super sugar-infused, processed juice (if we can even call it that) tasted like, I am proud to be sharing health facts about the real deal, today. Check out Nutrition Stripped’s comprehensive Spotlight on Grapefruit. McKel is a plant-based dietitian/nutritionist/health coach and our “go-to” girl for expert advice (and mouthwatering food photography). Also below we’re sharing some delicious looking grapefruit recipes from around the web. Stay warm out there today, DC. And Happy National Grapefruit February!

Grapefruit Brulee and Oatmeal with Buckwheat Honey, Almond Butter and Cream shared by Nancy’s Cravings (we’ve used our Vanilla Cashew Mylk as a dairy substitute in oatmeal and it’s been AMAZING! Extra creamy and protein packed!)
Grapefruit & Thyme Glazed Root Vegetables shared by Foraged Dish
Grapefruit Bars shared by Technicolor Kitchen (we suggest replacing butter with a non-darily alternative and the eggs with either unsweetened apple sauce or banana for a plant-based version)

[holiday detox] 15 reasons you should be drinking lemon water every morning …

lemonadeI started drinking coffee when I was 16 and later worked the morning shift in miscellaneous coffee shops all through college. So by now, coffee isn’t just a habit for me. It’s a ritual. It’s a little bit of slow down time before the rest of the world rushes in on my day. It’s basically WHY I WAKE UP AT ALL. In other words — I’m addicted. ;) So when I did my first juice cleanse a little over a year ago, I was VERY skeptical about quitting caffeine, even for 3 days.

In the end? I juiced for EIGHT.

Lemon juice is an amazing, all-natural, wake-me-up. Combined with a hearty dash of cayenne pepper, our Mean Lemonade has become my new morning ritual. Yes, admittedly, coffee is still part of my diet, but I was blown away to see how easily I could replace one with the other.

In addition to facilitating blood circulation (and therefore, helping curb your caffeine intake), drinking lemon juice works as an AMAZING detox, especially after indulging in holiday “traditions” (i.e: ALL THE ALCOHOL). Want to see what else the tiny but mighty, little lemon has to offer? Check out our Facebook page to see 15 Reasons Why You Should Be Drinking Lemon Water Every Morning.

Raw juice is LIVE and live juice has enzymes, phytonutrients and vitamins, which are very vulnerable to oxidation. Glass is the only vessel proven to preserve these nutrients at full vitality. Here at Puree Juice we are proud to package our juices in 16 oz. glass bottles which are reusable, free of chemicals and leaching and help cut down on trash.

Please return your rinsed out bottle to any of our locations for a discount on future in-store purchases or reuse it and share how you #reducereuserecyle!
